Site Maintenance is sometimes overlooked in the excitement of preparing for and launching a new Web site. As Web designer, my job involves advising you about inevitable browser upgrades and changes in Internet technologies and conventions that can impact your site adversely in the future, and helping you manage the maintenance costs when revisions become necessary. It also includes helping you understand that putting a site online and then never changing it is almost a waste of your time and money.
For some Web sites, changing content is less crucial than others. Artists and authors have greater maintenance needs than most, and an entrepreneur with an online boutique really needs to update his or her site frequently or their audience simply loses interest and finds another site with more compelling content and/or products. Professionals using their Web presence as an online brochure have the easiest job, but even then, they should be looking for ways to develop their content in interesting new ways if they hope to stay competitive with the hundreds of new sites coming online every day.
